Comedy Pantomime is an ancient tradition in the British Theater. Charlie Chaplin was the first to make it film art. Born into a music hall family, Chaplin, even as a youth, exhibited extraordinary comic instinct. Soon he was star performer for Fred Karno’s famous traveling music-hall troupe. During Karno’s second U.S. tour in 1912, Chaplin left the troupe to make comedies for Mack Sennett. At first Chaplin had difficulty adjusting to the frenzied studio atmosphere, and Sennett nearly fired him. But by the end of his first and only year at Keystone, Chaplin had become the most popular comedian in the world.
